Darby Racing Filly into Golden Slipper

Tara Madgwick - Saturday March 1

Darby Racing have a happy knack for finding serious value at Inglis Classic and they certainly got that in spades when paying $30,000 for Within the Law as the Lucky Vega (IRE) filly has been on fire in the Inglis incentive races and has now earned a crack at the Golden Slipper with her determined win in the Group II Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.

A brilliant winner of the $500,000 Inglis Banner in Melbourne last spring and then the $500,000 Inglis Nursery at Randwick on December, the Bjorn Baker filly went down narrowly last start in the $2million Inglis Millennium to exciting colt Rivellino, who won the Group III ATC Skyline Stakes today.

She franked that form when powering home with a late rush for Jason Collett to grab speedy Zousain filly Bellazaine by a head in a thriller and has won three of four starts earning $1.1million.

t;That was phenomenal. In the run nothing went right. She couldn't have got any further off the track and to just see her keep coming, I still didn't think she was going to get there halfway down the straight,” said Bjorn Baker.

“She's been like this the whole time through, she's got so much heart and she doesn't know how to run a bad race."

Within the Law will go straight into the Golden Slipper now she has legitimate prizemoney to add to her giant pile of Inglis cash.

"Definitely exciting for her, she's a really lovely filly. And to put her hand up today and get a run in the Slipper, before today she had zero prizemoney (for the Slipper) unfortunately, but she goes there as a live chance,” said Baker, who is happy to have another G1 contender in the stable carrying the Darby Racing colours.

"They're phenomenal. They just back up all the time finding these horses. They just do a wonderful job and she was a $30,000 purchase."

Bred and consigned by Yulong to the 2024 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Within The Law is the first foal of placed Dundeel mare Contract Signed, a granddaughter of multiple Group II winner So Gorgeous from the family of Denise's Joy.

Purchased in 2021 on Inglis Digital for $30,000 by Chatsworth Farm aka Yulong, Contract Signed has a yearling colt by Tagaloa and was covered again by Lucky Vega last year after slipping to Written Tycoon.

Within the Law has provided a dream start to the stud career of Yulong based Lucky Vega, a Group I winning son of Lope de Vega that stood at a modest fee of $16,500 last year.
