Three year-old filly Naina has taken time to mature and was having just her second start in the 1200m maiden following an unplaced debut last October.

Ridden quietly by Teo Nugent, she unwound a powerful finish to chime in and power clear for a two length win over the race favourite Baycat.

Teo Nugent was quietly confident of a good showing.

“She trialled up really well at Flemington and we came here full of confidence and the genuine speed really helped as they rock and rolled and I had a beautiful run through on the back of Ciaron’s runner (Mini Angel) and when I pulled the trigger she lengthened really well,” he said.

A $200,000 Magic Millions purchase from Coolmore for Mulcaster Bloodstock/Chris Waller Racing Pty Ltd, Naina runs for her trainer and various stable clients and is the first winner for winning So You Think mare Debate, a half-sister to Group II winner Unpretentious from the family of Group I winners Rockabubble and Chortle.

Debate produced a filly by King’s Legacy last spring and was then covered by Home Affairs.
