Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Friday March 16

Buyers that may be intimidated at the prices paid for the cream of the yearling crop at the Inglis Easter Sale, may find some solace in the two cheapest lots by Sebring at the 2015 sale.

Only a couple of yearlings in session 1 and 2 of the 2015 Easter Yearling Sale made less than the $20,000 paid by John Crowley for the Wendy Roche-trained Nettoyer.

A facile 10-length winner at Randwick last June, Nettoyer showed she is a stakes-winner in waiting when narrowly beaten into third place in last week’s Group III Aspiration Stakes at Randwick. That followed her fourth to Dixie Blossoms, Raiment and Francaletta in the Group II Guy Walter – Proven Thoroughbreds Stakes at Randwick on March 3.

Those three mares are among the favourites for Saturday’s Group 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill Gardens, which also features the second least expensive Sebring at Easter 2015.

She is the Chris Waller-trained Egg Tart, who reeled off six consecutive victories last season culminating in a pair of Group 1’s, the Schweppes Oaks at Morphettville ant the Queensland Oaks at Doomben.

Some gloss came off the daughter of Sebring last spring, following unplaced efforts in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap at Caulfield and the Group 1 Cantala Stakes at Flemington.

Making her first start in 17 weeks, Egg Tart flashed home for an encouraging fourth in the Group III Liverpool City Cup at Randwick on March 3.

There are two millionairesses, Silent Sedition and Zanbagh, in the Coolmore Classic and a further seven who will pass the magical seven figures if they claim the $344,000 winners cheque on Saturday.

Egg Tat is among that group. In her career to date, the 4yo mare has 6 wins 1 second and 1 third from 12 starts with ear4nings of $850,000.

That is already a colossal return on the $40,000 needed by Hermitage Thoroughbreds’ Anton Koolman to secure Egg Tart who, like Nettoyer, came from session 2 of the 2015 Easter Yearling Sale.

A 22nd of November foal, Egg Tart (pictured as a yearling ) was bred by Julie Brown who, along with husband Tony, owns the Jorson Farm at Wondai in Queensland.

The Browns purchased Egg Tart’s dam Mrs Windsor, who was carrying the dual Group 1 winning daughter of Sebring at the time, for $21,000 at the 2013 Inglis Broodmare Sale.

Egg Tart is the fourth foal second winner out of Mrs Windsor (King’s Best), a half-sister to Group 1 winners Heart Ruler and Coronation Day and daughter of Group 1 Metropolitan winner, Born To Be Queen.

Unfortunately, the Browns were unable to cash in on Egg Tart’s success.

They sold Mrs Windor’s weanling colt by Shamus Award for $48,000 at the 2016 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.

He was the final foal of the daughter of Group 1 Two Thousand Guineas winner King’s Best (Kingmambo). She died in November last year.
