Calyx Three Year Old Wins Tasmanian Derby

Craig Tompson - Friday February 7

Likeakalix was the first Australian Stakes winner for former Coolmore shuttler Calyx in January and he repeated the dose on Friday when winning the Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m).

Ridden towards the rear in the small field, the Leanne Gaffney trained three-year-old launched a string run widest around the home turn by David Pires and maintained the effort to prove too strong for Kicking King (Highland Reel) with Moorlands Miss (Santos) third.

The win takes his record to four wins, one seconds, and two thirds from seven starts, yet to miss a place, with earnings of $203,325.

Likeakalix was a $30,000 Magic Millions Tasmania purchase from the Armidale Stud draft for his trainer and has never missed a place in six starts with three wins and three placings netting over $113,000 in prizemoney.

Likeakalix was a $30,000 Magic Millions Tasmania purchase from Armidale Stud.

He is the best of two winners from Like a Song (IRE), who was bought by I Katz for $15,000 at the 2021 Inglis Broodmare Sale when in foal to Calyx with Likeakalix the result of the mating. She is an unraced half-sister to Group III winner Ladys First.

Likeakalix is the fifth stakes-winner worldwide and first in Australia for Calyx, who remains on the Coolmore roster in Ireland for 2025 at a fee of €12,500.
