$260,000 Satono Aladdin Filly Tops Karaka Book 2 Day 1

Media Release - Wednesday January 29

Following a strong Book 1, the momentum continued into NZB’s National Yearling Sales Series Book 2 session where 122 yearlings sold on Wednesday.

While the Book 2 format has condensed into a two-day sale, $4,936,000 was turned over with an average of $40,463 and a pleasing clearance rate of 73%.

$260,000 Satono Aladdin (Jpn) filly from Sparkling Rose.

The top lot came late in the day, when Lot 855, a filly by Satono Aladdin out of Sparkling Rose was knocked down to Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis for $260,000 from Brighthill Farm’s draft.

“She is just a lovely filly and has handled herself so professionally,” commented leading vendor Nick King.

“We treated her like a Book 1 filly and brought her up to Karaka nine days ago, not too many horses can parade for nine days straight and not miss a beat.

“I’m delighted to see Te Akau get her and pleased they were prepared to go that far for her. Leon Mountford, the breeder, is very happy, I’m delighted to get that good result for him.”

NZB’s Bloodstock Sales Manager Kane Jones was satisfied following the first day of Book 2.

“It was pleasing to see such spirited bidding on the quality horses, from local trainers, local agents as well as some of the internationals that have stayed on the grounds.”

“It was great to see astute judge in John Foote give Book 2 the respect it deserves. He’s put in the work and purchased some lovely horses.

“The clearance rate finishing on 73% is very satisfying and it will continue to rise overnight.”

The final day of selling continues on Thursday where lots 861 to 1088 will get underway from 10am (NZT) at Karaka.

All yearlings purchased at Karaka 2025 are eligible to be nominated for NZB’s lucrative Karaka Millions Series, featuring the $1m TAB Karaka Millions 2YO, $1.5m TAB Karaka Millions 3YO and the $1m NZB Mega Maiden Series. To nominate your yearling, contact  finance@nzb.co.nz or call +64 9 298 0055.  Entries close Monday 3 March 2025.
