Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday January 28

There were some interesting juveniles in action at Randwick on Tuesday that featured a couple of heat winners in the James Harron Bloodstock colours and a colt by Too Darn Hot (GB) that has designs on the $2million Inglis Millennium on February 8.

Zousain filly Bellazain drew wide and finished midfield on debut in the Group III ATC Gimcrack Stakes, but the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained filly has looked good this preparation and led all the way here at her second trial this prep to win the 800m dash by a little over a length.  Plenty of interest in runner-up Rivellino and third placed Extractor, who both finished off well and have already shown above average ability on raceday.

The Kris Lees trained Rivellino won his debut at Randwick over 1000m on January 4 and had James McDonald on board for his trial today which was certainly encouraging.

The Michael Freedman trained Extractor is a Magic Millions horse, so not in the Inglis Millennium picture, but given he was third at his only start in the $1million ATC Golden Gift at his only start to North England and West of Swindon, he’s going to be looking for a path towards the Black Type races.

Widden Stud will be hoping see Bellazain back to the races given they will offer her half-sister by Supido at Inglis Classic as Lot 63.

Half-sister by Supido to Bellazain.

Emirates Park’s homebred blueblood Snitzel filly Marhoona has had two trials this month for the Michael Freedman stable and won both of them and looked good here pulling away, albeit in steady time.

Marhoona is bred to be good as a sibling to Group II winner Hilal and stakes-winners Salateen and Trojan Harbour with her grand-dam Salameh, a Group III winning half-sister to Group I winner and sire Al Maher.

The Peter Snowden trained Gambler had one start in the spring when unplaced in the Listed VRC Maribyrnong Trial, but has returned this time as a gelding. He was a man on a mission here, leading all the way and scooting clear to win by six lengths with his last 600m in a slick 32.32, the fastest sectional of all the trials held this morning.

Gambler might not be a stallion prospect anymore, but has plenty of appeal for Hong Kong. He is a half-brother to three winners headed by stakes-placed Nitrous and is from Group II placed Flamboyant Lass, a sister to Group III winner Attention.

Also in the JHB colours, but trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott is unraced Exceed and Excel colt Anarchist, who worked forward to lead and kicked on to win by a length over stylish Wootton Bassett  filly Wootton Lass, who was held together and did everything right at her first outing.

Anarchist has now won both of his trials this prep and is the first foal of I Am I Invincible’s Group I NZ Thousand Guineas winner Media Sensation, whose second foal is a Snitzel filly that will be offered by Sledmere Stud at Inglis Easter as Lot 52.
