Too Darn Discreet Makes it Three on the Bounce in G3 Ethereal Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday October 19

Royally-bred Too Darn Hot (GB) filly Too Darn Discreet continued her upward trajectory, making it three on the trot with a hard-fought victory in Saturday's Group III Schweppes Ethereal Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield.

After breaking her maiden at Sandown at start four, the Dan O'Sullivan-trained filly broke through for a stakes win in the Group II Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on October 5.

Given a positive ride by Michael Dee, the topweight swept to the lead at the 200m, then held the challenge of the Brutal filly  Jenni's Meadow by a neck, with a long-neck back to the Dundeel filly Femminile in third.

"That was a good, tough win," O'Sullivan said.

"She travels into the race like she's going to put them away, and then she wants to lug in and do a few things wrong. So there should be more to offer.

"Whether she wants a one-eye blinker on or just a little change in a bit or something like that, I'll have a chat to Michael.

"She's terribly well-bred. She always had a fair bit of attitude. But, whenever we asked her to do a bit of track work, she's always gone up with it.

"She's very tough, she's a bit quirky, but she's handling these big occasions really well. I think she'll be better for the run over the trip. But just the little things she's doing wrong up the straight is sort of a little bit of concern for me, but hopefully we can straighten them out."

"I am certainly considering the Oaks, especially the way she is, as tough as she is. The Wakeful has proved over the years to be the form race that you need to run in to get to the Oaks. So, this run will probably take a bit out of her. We'll see how she recovers. We'll enjoy the moment today first, and think about what we'll do going ahead."Bred and part-owned by David Peacock, Too Darn Discreet is a half-sister to stakes-placed, 5-time winner Really Discreet (Helmet) and is the fourth winner from as many foals for the Shamardal mare Maybe Discreet.

A half-sister to Group III winner Just Discreet and stakes-placed Always Discreet, Maybe Discreet's four stakes wins were highlighted by the Group 1 SAJC Schweppes Oaks.

Maybe Discreet has a yearling brother to Too Darn Discreet and slipped to Ghaiyyath (IRE) last year.
