Caulfield Guineas Winning Sires - Where Are They Now?

Tara Madgwick - Thursday October 10

Worth a whopping $3million, the Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas (1600m) run this Saturday in Melbourne, has been won by some outstanding colts over the years, so we thought we’d take a look at the fortunes of the past winners who have gone to stud in Australasia.

Champion sires Redoute’s Choice and Lonhro both won this iconic race, but we’ve started our look at the more recent winners of the race with  the 2009 winner Starspangledbanner, who went on to achieve worldwide fame and fortune the following year when dropped back to sprinting trips and sent to the Northern Hemisphere.

Starspangledbanner is a stalwart on the Coolmore roster.

He was rated the best turf sprinter in the world in 2010 after winning both the Group I Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and then the Darley July Sprint Cup and kicked off a shuttle career for Coolmore at a fee of $44,000.

Starspangledbanner has had his ups and downs due to well documented fertility issues, but is such a good stallion perseverance has paid dividends and he remains on the Coolmroe roster and this year stands for the same fee at which he started back in 2011.

Ole Kirk has had a flying start to his stud career.

The 2020 winner Ole Kirk has made a stunning start to his stud career at Vinery producing the winner of last week’s Group III ATC Breeders’ Plate in King Kirk and his daughter O ‘Ole was second in the Group III ATC Gimcrack Stakes.
