Star Turn Mare Wins G2 Stocks Stakes

Tara Madgwick - Friday September 27

A top class mare in Western Australia that worked through her grades and was second in the Group I WATC Railway Stakes last November, Alsephina showed her class at Moonee Valley on Friday night to win the Group II MVRC Stocks Stakes (1600m).

Trained by Grant and Alana Williams, the daughter of Star Turn gave promise of good things to come when running third in the Group II VRC Let’s Elope Stakes at her first run back from a spell.

She took good benefit from the run and with Blake Shinn keen to retain the ride Alsephina produced a brilliant change of gear to surge to the line after being held up to win by half a length.

Alsephina has the overall record of 10 wins and six placings from 17 starts with prizemoney just shy of $1million and the Group I VRC Empire Rose Stakes is her spring goal.

Bred by G & G Bloodstock, Alsephina is the best of three winners from as many to race out of the stakes-winning Street Cry (IRE) mare Delta Gee.

Second to Response in the Group III Matron Stakes and to Lady Lynette in the Group III Tesio Stakes, Delta Gee is a half-sister to Listed winner Wave Rock.

Delta Gee has a yearling colt by Brazen Beau and was covered again by him last spring producing a colt foal on September 6.

Alsephina is the second stakes-winner of the new season for Vinery Stud’s Star Turn, who stands at a fee of $27,500.
