Hurry Curry Stakes Claim for Crown Oaks

Mark Smith - Sunday September 22

Fresh off a Bairnsdale maiden win, the progressive Ocean Park filly Hurry Curry entered the Victoria Oaks picture with a commanding performance in the Crown Oaks Preview (1800m) at Flemington on Sunday.

Ridden by Jye McNeil for Danny O’Brien, the Waikato Stud homebred settled outside the leader Mumsie before landing in the one one when Call Me Rhonda circled the field.

Set to an all-out drive at the 400m, Hurry Curry hit the front at the 300m and attacked the line to defeat the Fastnet Rock filly Inevitable Truth by one and a half lengths with the Contributer (IRE) filly Our Paramour in third.

Hurry Curry debuted when finishing midfield in a Moe maiden over 1217m on August 17.

Three weeks later, the daughter of Ocean Park made short work of a field of maidens over 1600m at Bairnsdale.

“She’s a lovely filly from of the Chitticks that we have had success with over the years,” O’Brien said.

“She is by Ocean Park, who can get a really good middle-distance horse.

“She won convincingly at Bairnsdale, and this was only her third start. She won quite softly, so promising signs.

“She is a filly that will be better again in the autumn, but we will give her the chance to push further into the spring. She probably will not run now for four weeks, the fillies race on Caulfield Cup Day, the Wakeful then The Oaks if everything goes well."

Consigned by  Sledmere Stud, Scone, as Agent for Waikato Stud, at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Hurry Curry fell short of her $150,000 reserve.

She is the second winner for the winning Savabeel mare Hurry, a sister to stakes-placed winners Helsinki and Sorrentina.

Hurry’s dam Rush (O’Reilly) is a sister to the Group III MRC Thoroughbred Club Stakes-winner and Group 1 VRC Ascot Vale Stakes runner-up Splashing Out, the dam of Shopaholic, Splurge, and Packing Pins.

Rush is also a half-sister to dual Group 1 Doncaster Mile winner and successful stallion Sacred Falls.

Beamish Bloodstock shelled out $70,000 for Hurry’s Tivaci colt at Karaka in January.

After foaling a brother to Hurry Curry last spring, Hurry visited Ardrossan.
