Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Monday January 29
Half a dozen juvenile heats at Randwick on Monday morning featured a smart win for Listed ATC Gimcrack Stakes winner Satin Slipper and a Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained I Am Invincible colt that looks ready to rock and roll in the $250,000 Inglis Classic next weekend, plus the first look at the 2017 Magic Millions sale-topper.

Satin SlipperA stylish stakes-winner on debut in the spring, the Peter and Paul Snowden trained Pierro filly Satin Slipper had a soft trial at Wyong on January 16, but was asked to do more this time around.

She was sent forward from the gate by Blake Shinn to take up the lead and cruised throughout to win the 1050 metre trial in 1:04.00.

Foaled and raised at Newgate Farm for her breeder Mrs Belinda Bateman, Satin Slipper is the first foal of Group I placed Group II winner Satin Shoes, who won over $800,000 in prizemoney for Mrs Bateman and her late husband Dr Edmund Bateman.

Satin Shoes won the Group II ATC Silver Slipper and was then ninth to Sepoy in the Golden Slipper, so connections will be hoping Satin Slipper can also progress along a similar pathway during the autumn.

Santos as a yearlingOf the five two year-old heats run over 745 metres, the fastest winner by a second was the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained colt Santos, who was third on debut in the Listed ATC Breeders Plate to Performer and then fourth in the $100,000 Victory Vein.

Having his second trial back from a spell, he jumped from the outside gate for Tim Clark and covered ground all the way before looming up down the outside and powering to the line to win by the best part of a length in 43.20 seconds.

A $180,000 Inglis Classic purchase from the Emirates Park draft, Santos will no doubt be well fancied in the $250,000 Inglis Classic race next Saturday at Warwick Farm.

Santos is a half-brother to Japanese Group III winner Melagrana from Ghaliah, a half-sister to Group II winners Mutawaajid, Adeewin and Fatoon, the dam of Group I ATC Epsom Handicap winner Fat Al.

2017 MM sale-topper TchaikovskyInteresting runner in this trial behind Santos was Redoute’s Choice colt Tchaikovsky, who carried the James Harron Bloodstock colours and is trained by Peter and Paul Snowden.

Tchaikovsky topped the 2017 Magic Millions Yearling Sale for Arrowfield Stud when bought by JHB for $1.3 million and has obviously needed a bit of time, but that patience might be about to be rewarded.

He did everything right for Blake Shinn, albeit always being under a hold to finish a close up third.

Tchaikovsky is from unraced Stravinsky (USA) mare Ballet Blue, a half-sister to Group II winner The Heavyweight.

Other juvenile heat winners were: Couvre Lit (Bernardini (USA), Miss Blumenthal (Into Mischief), Wagner (Bernardini (USA), Military Zone (Epaulette). Click here to see the full trial results.
