Waller Buys $425,000 Savabeel Colt

Media Release - Monday January 29
Australia's leading trainer Chris Waller was amongst the early action on the second morning of the annual NZB National Yearling Sale series at Karaka.

Acting on behalf of the Sydney conditioner, respected bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster secured a pair of individuals from leading Matamata nursery, Waikato Stud, within the first 30 minutes of selling commencing.

Savabeel colt from Chilled Out - Trish DunnellMulcaster successfully outbid Te Akau Racing's David Ellis to win the day with an offer of $425,000 on Lot 108, a Savabeel colt from Anabaa mare, Chilled Out. He followed up immediately with a $220,000 winning bid for Lot 109, an Ocean Park colt from the family of former top juvenile Good Faith.

"We are sourcing horses for a syndicate we have put together specifically for this sale," said Mulcaster.

"The Kaha syndicate is a continuation of a concept we have used successfully here at Karaka in recent years as we look for horses to target the classic three-year-old races in Australia.

"Preferment is a leading example of the type of horse we have bought here in the past who went on to become a multiple Group One winner.

"The syndicate is made up of existing stable clients who have agreed on a set contribution which gives us a budget to work with during the sale."

Mulcaster admitted he was pleasantly surprised at what he had to pay for the Savabeel colt after there had been plenty of pre-sale hype around the colt.

"You never really know what you are going to have to pay for this type of colt," he said.

"He was one we were very keen on and I thought he was very good buying at that price."

Mulcaster had been active on the first evening of the sale, securing another pair of colts including Lot 5, a colt from first-season sire Charm Spirit out of Zabeel mare, Zambezi.

Consigned by Goodwood Stud, the colt is a half-brother to Gr. 2 placegetter Zambezi Warrior who is a son of multiple Group One winner Tall Poppy. – NZ Racing Desk
