Astonishing Win for Maurice Filly Berangere - Granddaughter of Mosheen

Mark Smith - Monday August 19

Unlike her sister Primo Scene (JPN), Mosheen’s first foal, Calico (JPN), failed to distinguish herself on the racetrack, but she got one up on her sister at Niigata on Sunday.

Calico had her 3-year-old daughter by Maurice (JPN), Berangere (JPN), sent out favourite to break her maiden at start six over 1400m.

Placed in three of her previous five starts, the three-quarter-sister to Danon Ayers Rock rocketed home from near the tail of the 18-runner field under Christophe Lemaire to win by a length.

The following race was a Newcomer over 1800m for the babies, with Primo Scene’s first foal Primo Sequence (JPN) sent off a short-priced favourite.

Like Berangere, Sequence was ridden by Christophe Lemaire for Tetsuya Kimura, but unlike Berangere, the son of Epiphaneia could not get the job done, finishing third to Passion Rich (Duramente) and Nishino Agent (Isla Bonita).

Berangere’s 2-year-old brother Just A Party finished third on debut at Kyoto in June before disappointing when a heavily backed sixth of eight at Chukyo on August 11.

Calico has a yearling colt by Lord Kanaloa.

Triple Group III winner and Group 1 Victoria Mile runner-up Primo Scene has a yearling filly by Lord Kanaloa and a filly foal by Saturnalia.

Calico and Primo Scene are daughters of Deep Impact, and another of Mosheen’s daughters, Paronella (Lord Kanaloa), has a promising 2-year-old in the Cheval Grand filly Karpuz Pelus.

After making a winning debut in a 1200m Newcomer at Hakodate in June, Karpuz Pelus finished a close-up fifth in the Group III Nisai Stakes over the same course and distance on July 13.

Mosheen’s dual-listed stakes-winner, Danon Ayers Rock (Maurice), has not been seen since clearly failing to see out the 2400m Japanese Derby.

Mosheen’s daughter Riversleigh (Duramente), a member of the Arrowfield broodmare band, was covered by Maurice last season. Her first foal by Kizuna was a $380,000 purchase for Busuttin Racing at the Magic Millions.

Four-time Group 1 winner Mosheen (Fastnet Rock) has a 2-year-old Epiphaneia colt named Kosciuszko, who was a $A3.2 million Select Foal, a yearling filly by Maurice, and foaled a colt by Kitasan Black.
