Mogumber Park owner Colin Brown has implemented a cost-effective deal for broodmare owners supporting his resident stallions Marine One and Safeguard this season.

Breeders booking into Marine One at $8,800 (inc GST) will receive another service at no extra charge to Safeguard who is advertised at a $4,400 (inc GST) fee.  The two-for-one price is a win-to-nothing considering Safeguard’s Book 1 yearlings have averaged $120,000 over the last three Magic Millions Sales in Perth.  Similar returns will make them even more profitable off what is effectively a free service.

Brown is also confident of another quality book to Marine One.  “We did say Marine One fitted the profile of a successful stallion when he arrived here from Melbourne last year. The response was outstanding and we’re really looking forward to his first foals next month. He is the perfect package – early, quick, a wonderful pedigree and drop dead gorgeous.  Many stallions bring some of those, but he brings it all!!”

Marine One (Capitalist) won a G2 Rubiton Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield and his owners China Horse Club and Kingstar Farm are confident the precocious sireline will take off in Western Australia.  Their interstate mares introduced new blood to the west and complemented an eminent home-based book.

China Horse Club and Kingstar Farm’s Matthew Sandblom are also taking advantage of the breed-back option offered by the Westspeed Platinum Scheme.  Their mares with a PPT to Marine One include Comeback Star (Zoustar), Dance Shoes (Bull Point), Faraway Eyes (Ustinov), Kistos (Pierro) and Medici Madonna (Exceed And Excel).

“It will help fill Safeguard’s book, too,” Brown explained.  “He has done a remarkable job from relatively small books, with the current 2yo crop coming from a book of just over 30 covers, but he has averaged closer to 50 mares in his last three books.  His metrics are fantastic, with 68% winners to runners, 13% stakes-performers to winners and each runner has averaged some $85,000 in stakes – off a $4,400 service fee.

“While he has a loyal and growing band of supporters, I have always wondered what he could do with a book of 80 plus mares, so hence the two-for-one initiative this year.”

Pearce Racing filly Sinful Living sent Safeguard to the top of the WA 2yo table in the New Year with consecutive wins at Ascot, but he’s been overtaken by Playing God who has had 16 starters this season.  “Take nothing away from Playing God,” Brown countered.  “His success is well-deserved and self-fulfilling.  He will keep winning premierships for years to come.”

Safeguard sired his first Hong Kong winner on Wednesday when Kyrus Dragon claimed the Shek Sheung River Hcp (1200m) at Happy Valley.  The David Hall-trained chestnut kept to the fence before shifting to the outside of Ka Ying Cheer (Reward For Effort) to obtain clear running in the straight for Karis Teetan.

Better known as Just Go to Perth racegoers, he won twice as a spring 3yo at Belmont and followed up with a fourth to My Bella Mae (Deep Field) in the 2022 LR Placid Ark Stakes (1200m) at Ascot.  He was bred and initially raced by Loloma Farms owner Kevin Fowler who has been a strong supporter of Safeguard.
