One to Watch – Nowra

Tara Madgwick - Monday January 15
When John Singleton named this horse The Greatest, it’s fairly safe to say he was not planning on it breaking its maiden on debut at Nowra as a four year-old.

$3,850,000 mare Samantha Miss sold in 2009Prepared by Bjorn Baker, the Street Cry (IRE) gelding had finished midfield in two previous trials and went to the post at $5 for the 1100 metre maiden.

He settled near the tail of the field and powered home to win by three-quarters of a length.

A homebred for Strawberry Hill Stud, The Greatest is the third foal to race and third winner from triple Group I winner and Champion 3YO Filly Samantha Miss, who is yet to produce a horse with anywhere near her level of ability.

By champion sire Redoute’s Choice, Samantha Miss was bought by John Singleton for a whopping $3,850,000 at the 2009 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale.

Her next foal after The Greatness is a two year-old filly by Frankel called Miss Fabulass that is trained by Kris Lees and finished second in a Gosford barrier trial before Christmas.

She has a yearling and weanling colt to follow by Medaglia D’Oro (USA) and was covered last spring by Sebring.
