Mission Of Love Triumphs in Caloundra Cup

Mark Smith - Sunday July 14

After settling back at the tail of the field, Angela Jones made a race-winning move when sticking to the rails on the home turn to capture Sunday's $300,000 Wishlist Caloundra Cup (2400m) on Mission Of Love.

Trained by John Symons and Sheila Laxon, The Mission's lightly raced 4-year-old daughter was the pauper in a race of millionaires.

She entered the race with earnings of $86,000 and exited with $260,000 from a record of three wins, a second and two thirds from 13 starts.

When taking the shortcut on the corner, Jones manoeuvred Mission Of Love to the better going in the centre of the track.

She defeated the last-start Group II Brisbane Cup winner, Alegron (Teofilo), by a neck, with the outsider Warp Speed (Star Witness) two lengths back in third.

A $120,000 purchase for Michael Kirby and John Symons from the Lyndhurst Stud Farm draft at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale, Mission Of Love snapped a seven-run losing streak dating back to last September when winning over 1200m on the same track.

The daughter of The Mission is the best of three winners from four to race for the unraced High Chaparral (IRE) mare Hanaan, whose dam Chatty One (Storm Cat) is a sister to the Grade II winner Cat Chat, the dam of the Grade 1 Keeneland Spinster Stakes winner In Lingerie (Empire Maker).

Hanaan was purchased for a mere $2,000 by Ulandra Trust from the Coolmore draft at the 2016 National Broodmare Sale.

Chris Waller Racing and Mulcaster Bloodstock teamed up to buy Hanaan's Better Than Ready filly for $47,000 at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale.

Bred by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Hanaan has a weanling brother to Mission Of Love and was covered by Encryption last spring.

Mission Of Love is the second stakes-winner for Aquis Stud's Group 1 ATC Champagne Stakes winner The Mission.

The son of Choisir stands at Aquis for $4,400 in 2024.
