Juvenile Trial Watch – Rosehill

Tara Madgwick - Friday July 12

There was plenty of trial action at Rosehill on Friday morning with seven heats won by juveniles including the three-quarter sister to legendary champion Winx.

Retained to race by John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds, Pride of Dubai filly Wings of Desire is the last foal from Winx’s dam Vegas Showgirl, who died in 2023 and she is beginning to show some real progress. Prepared by Michael Freedman, she finished last in her first trial back in February, but returned with a good trial second last month and then found the line with a flourish today after travelling back and wide throughout in this 1023m hit out.

Wings of Desire is by Pride of Dubai, who currently has two of the best mares in the country in Pride of Jenni and Bella Nipotina, so connections have good reason for optimism.

Leading New Zealand sire Per Incanto (USA) can get a very fast horse and it looks like Michael Freedman has one in his stable in The Enchanter (NZ), who blitzed them in his first trial to win by four lengths.

The Enchanter was a $325,000 Inglis Easter purchase.

A $325,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Michael Freedman Racing / MyRacehorse / Mick Wallace from the Little Avondale Stud draft, The Enchanter is the first foal of Miss Contessa, a winning three-quarter sister to stakes-winner Miss Appleton from stakes-winner Our Aspiration. It’s far from a trendy pedigree and he has already been gelded, but he was an outstanding type as a yearling and is giving me Lost and Running  vibes!

Following 900m heat was won in similar overall time by the Chris Waller trained I Am Invincible colt Maori Chief in the Go Bloodstock colours. He was having his second trial and first this prep and did everything right to surge home held together and win on the line.

Retained to race by Go Bloodstock, Maori Chief is a half-brother to Group III winner Red Resistance and is the third foal of super fast Group II winning Lonhro mare Heatherly.

Tassort has been a revelation this season with a string of quick winners and Team Hawkes produced another likely type in Gamp, who comes from a family noted for fast fillies. She led all the way and was eased to the line to win by three-quarters of a length.

Retained to race by Grant Briscoe’s Kirks Bridge Farm, Gamp is a half-sister to stakes-placed Madame Odette from a winning half-sistsre to stakes-placed Golden Sunshine. Her third dam Cloudlet was a lightning fast stakes-winning full sister to Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Zephyrz.

Additional winners were: Yabby Pump (Castelvecchio), Eminent Arrival (Headwater) and Canpikapony (Zousain).
