First Season Battle – Dissident Sets the Pace

Tara Madgwick - Thursday January 11
An outstanding crop of first season sires have made this year's Magic Millions Yearling Sale an intriguing battleground for the young guns so as we head into day two let's take a look at who is leading the way.

Newgate Farm's Dissident and Deep Field are making play with the Australian Horse of the Year holding an edge over his barn mate with 13 yearlings averaging $258,846.

The son of Sebring did best with this colt from Prompt that made $525,000 for Newgate Farm when knocked down to George Moore Bloodstock.

A half-brother to Group winners Prompt Response and Prompt Return, he is the fifth foal of a terrific producer, whose previous four foals are all winners.

Deep Field actually had the edge over Dissident in terms of single best result for a first season sire with his colt from Reggae making $675,000 for Kia Ora Stud when secured by Orbis Bloodstock.

A half-brother to Group II placed Unique Quality, he is from a full sister to Group I winner Spartacus and Hong Kong Derby winner Johann Cruyff while other family members include Group I winners Laganore and Blazing Speed.

Coolmore's Rubick is third on the list and off a fee of $17,600 is punching well above his weight with an average price of $175,000!

His top seller was a cracking colt from Our Songbird that made $470,000 for Segenhoe Stud when secured by Jadeskye Racing/ Brad Widdup Racing.

The sale continues.
