Change of Luck for Madrina

Mark Smith - Saturday June 8

Letting a Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained 2-year-old loose on an uncontested lead over 1100m, there will always be one result.

After three seconds and a fourth in a Listed race at Eagle Farm, it all fell in place for Madrina to open her winning account in Saturday's Schweppes Hcp on a heavy track at Randwick.

With 2kgs off the Amy McLucas, the daughter of Street Boss (USA) bounded around at her leisure with stablemate Buckingham Palace as the lone challenger. The Written By debutant could get no closer than two and a quarter lengths, with the heavily backed Tassort filly Shamadan a length back in third.

"To be honest, I don't think she was handling the ground early, McLucas said.

"She was changing stride but proved too strong. Once she straightened up, she gave a fantastic feel."

A homebred for Bruce Wilson's Glentree Pastoral, Madrina is the fifth winner from six to race for the Listed Queen Adelaide Stakes winner and Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes third Armed For Action.

A daughter of Exceed And Excel, Armed for Action is out of the Timber Country (USA) mare Brave and Bold, a three-quarter sister to Wakeful Stakes winner and Canterbury Guineas runner-up Timbourina and a half to Group II winner Brave Prince and dual Listed winner Valourina out of the Queensland Oaks and Queensland Derby winner, Bravery.

A sister to Madrina fell short of her $120,000 reserve at the 2024Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Sold on Inglis Digital in 2022 to Viv Oldfield for $85,000, Armed For Action foaled a Shamus Award filly last spring and was bred back to Street Boss (USA).

Madrina is the fourth 2-year-old winner of the season for Street Boss (USA) and the third out of Exceed And Excel mares led by VRC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Traffic Warden, stakes-placed Toque, as well as the Listed Maribyrnong Trial runner-up Cerons.
