Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Friday May 31

There were six heats at Randwick on Friday morning won by juveniles including some unraced prospects by champion sires including Snitzel.

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have been patient with Snitzel colt Wanaruah, who was fourth in his first ever trial to Spywire earlier this month and improved markedly at his second outing, taking the leading and kicking on well to the line to win by more than a length in the quickest time of the 1050m 2YO heat winners.

Wanaruah was entered for Magic Million as a yearling and withdrawn, then passed in at Inglis Easter with Fernrigg Farm electing to keep and race him, which may well prove a good decision. He is from South African Group II winner Mella Maria, who has had two winners from three to race.

Go Bloodstock have had a great year with the fillies they have bred  - think Golden Slipper winner Lady of Camelot and Platinum Jubilee sold for $3.5million this week - and Twinkling Star is another to carry their gold and white colours. Trained by Michael Freedman, the daughter of Zoustar was having her third trial and second this prep and surged forward from a wide gate to lead and had just enough left on the line to hold off $2.5million I Am Invincible colt Railway Man.

Retained to race, Twinkling Star is the fourth foal of Group II winning I Am Invincible mare Look to the Stars, who had a Russian Revolution yearling filly sell for $300,000 at Magic Millions this year.

Runner-up Railway Man has looked promising in all of his trials, but his one trip to the races back in January was underwhelming to say the least. It’s going to be interesting to see what Ciaron Maher does with this colt, who connections would no doubt like to see finish his juvenile season as a winner at least.

He is the first foal of Group I winning sprinter Booker, whose second foal, a filly by I Am Invincible, made $3million at Inglis Easter this year, so there is high expectation around this family with Booker exported to Kentucky this year after slipping her foal to Justify.

Carrying the China Horse Club/ Newgate colours, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Fastnet Rock colt Mayfair made a good impression at his second trial jumping quickly from an outside gate to work forward and then improved all the way up the straight doing his best work on the line to score a half length win.

A $625,000 Magic Millions purchase for China Horse Club/Newgate/Go/Trilogy from the Newgate draft, Mayfair is the second foal of imported stakes-winner Cicatrix (USA).

Additional winners were: Everybody Rise (Snitzel), Lady Tassort (Tassort), Fortingall (I Am Invincible),
