Double the Boom

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday January 2
The double Danehill cross does polarise the bloodstock industry, but given its widespread prevalence and steadily growing success it can't be ignored and one stallion that has really added some fuel to the fire is Spirit of Boom, whose three two year-old stakes-winners are all bred that way.

Spirit of BoomA dual Group I winning son of Sequalo, Spirit of Boom is from Temple Spirit, who is by Danehill's rather unsuccessful sire son Special Dane.

A stakes-placed winner of eight races, Temple Spirit was his best offspring by a country mile and her record at stud as the dam of not only Spirit of Boom, but also his Group I winning half-brother Temple of Boom suggests she was a blue hen in the making.

Sadly, she died after producing just four foals and one of those, the placed filly Gentle Spirit has an entry for Magic Millions with Eureka Stud offering her Real Saga filly as Lot 943.

But I digress, the real interest here is Spirit of Boom and his seven winners (three stakes-winners) from 18 runners before the end of the year, that's a flying start by anyone's reckoning.

Last year's Champion First Season Sire Pierro won the title with just seven winners in total (1 stakes-winner) and prizemoney of $872,635.

Champion First Season Sire the year before was Smart Missile, who also won with seven winners and his total earnings of $454,705 was less than Spirit Boom's current tally of $500,060.

JonkerGo back another year and it was Hinchinbrook with eight winners, so in the context of recent Champion Australian First Season Sires, Spirit of Boom is right up there with the best.

Spirit of Boom's three stakes-winners - Ef Troop, Jonker and Outback Barbie - are all running in the $2million Magic Millions 2YO Classic on Saturday week, so his progeny prizemoney haul is set to grow.

He has 11 entries for the 2018 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and six of them carry the double Danehill cross…. I doubt buyers will be shying away from those youngsters! Click here to see them.
