Juvenile Trial Watch – Rosehill

Tara Madgwick - Thursday May 2

Busy set of trials at Rosehill on Thursday morning featured six heats won by juveniles that included some unraced youngsters by I Am Invincible, Better Than Ready and Shalaa (IRE) and one of them has a half-sister headed to the MM National Yearling Sale.

The John O’Shea trained I Am Invincible colt True Amor was having his fourth trial and second this prep, so has had a good education and does look ready to go to the races on this professional effort.

A $550,000 Magic Millions purchase from Lustre Lodge, True Amor is the second foal of Group II placed My True Love, whose yearling filly by Capitalist is entered for the MM National Yearling Sale as Lot 1382 for Attunga Stud.

Bjorn Baker is the trainer of Shalaa (IRE) colt Shalaa Gold, who is on the improve and looked good winning his third trial and second this prep by a length and a half.

Shalaa Gold was a $220,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Emirates Park draft for Bjorn Baker Racing/Clarke Bloodstock Pty Ltd. He is the equal highest priced yearling by Shalaa sold in 2023 and interestingly the horse that shares the honour is Group placed juvenile Roselyn’s Star.

Shalaa Gold is from Group III placed Murtle Turtle, who has had four foals to race all winners.

The quickest of the juvenile heat winners over 900m was the Lee and Cherie Curtis trained Better Than Ready gelding Better Breakout, who scooted along to win by more than a length over stylish Snitzel filly Lady Shenandoah. She impressed us winning her first trial last month and looked good again.

A $62,500 MM Book 2 purchase for his trainers, Better Breakout is a half-brother to stakes-placed she’s a Rogue from stakes-placed Quelle Liaison.

Additional heat winners were: Unleeshing (Dundeel), Tardelli (I Am Invincible) and Magical Moments (Winning Rupert).
