Bold Soul Powers to Victory in Chairman’s Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday April 27

Patrick Payne seems to have found a winning formula in taking a small contingent of his Tasmania performers to the Adelaide Carnival.

After striking in the Group III SAJC Auraria Stakes with his 3-time Tasmanian Stakes winner Wings of Song (Mendelssohn), Payne sent out his Tasmanian Derby hero Bold Soul to capture Saturday’s Group III PFD Food Services Chairman’s Stakes (2000m) at Morphettville.

The 3-year-old son of Embellish came with a barnstorming finish under Jake Noonan to defeat Just Berrilliant (Justify) by a half-length, with Air Assault (Justify) a nose back in third.

A $20,000 Karaka Book 2 purchase for Hamish Auret from the Te Keeti Bloodstock draft, Bold Soul advances his record to five wins and three thirds from eight starts with earnings of $371,675.

Jake Noonan was critical of his ride on Bols Soul last start in the Port Adelaide Guineas.

“I didn’t put enough trust in the horse last time when he hit that flat spot,” Noonan admitted

“Today, I just trusted the horse and Paddy instilled in me to do that. If he gets out of his ground, don’t worry about it; if he hits a flat spot, don’t worry about it.

“It’s a nice track, and he’s got time to balance up and hit the line if he’s good enough, he should close well.

“When he hit that flat spot, I didn’t rush him through it. I gave him the chance to pick himself up, and then from the 400 – 500m, I felt like the winner a long way out.

“I had the stick in the left all the way and was ready for him to hang in, but he went pretty straight and flattened out in the last 100 metres and got there.

“I wasn’t worried who I was following and just wanted to ride my horse. He rolled along the other day, and I trusted him to get the first half right so he could finish the second half.

“Paddy and his team have great credentials, and their deeds speak for themselves. This horse looks in great order. He had a Tasmanian prep, but they don’t have a hard time in Tassie. They get trained down at the beach with Adam Trinder and are in a good environment. That allows three-year-olds like this to have that sort of preparation and to come here and be in good order.”

Embellish

Bold Soul is the lone winner from two to race for the Singspiel import Twin Soul (IRE).

A winner of three consecutive races in Britain for Andrew Balding, Twin Soul (IRE) placed at Caulfield and Sandown twice in a light career in Australia with Michael Kent.

The daughter of Singspiel was a $5,500 purchase for Te Keeti Bloodstock at the 2019 NZB Karaka May Sale.

Twin Soul’s dam Kirk Wynd is a half-sister to  Group I winners Right Approach from the family of Highclere’s half-sister Christchurch (So Blessed).

Twin Soul (IRE) was pensioned after foaling Bold Soul

Bold Soul is the first stakes-winner for Cambridge Stud’s Embellish (Savabeel).
