Family Strikes Twice in Half an Hour

Mark Smith - Tuesday December 26

Trelawney Stud's Brent and Sherry Taylor probably did not know whether to laugh or cry when the Jimmy Choux mare Addison, nosed out Winkelmann in a blanket finish to the Dennis Hanrahan Handicap at Caulfield.

The Taylors bred and sold Addison (photo Grant Courtney ) to Belmont Bloodstock for $90,000 at the 2015 NZB Premier Yearling Sale but own Winkelmann who was purchased through Bruce Perry Bloodstock out of the Mapperley Stud draft for $140,000 at the same sale.

It was a special half hour for Trelawney as Addison's half-brother Grunt hacked up by three and a quarter lengths over 1600 metres at Morphettville.

The Mick Price-trained son of O'Reilly was a $220,000 purchase by M G Price Racing/Cameron Cooke B/Stock from the Trelawney Stud draft at the 2016 NZB Premier Yearling sale.

He has won two from three and Price holds him in high regard.

'Grunt (pictured right as a yearling ) is a work in progress but is a really good horse,'' Price told Racing.com.

''I think he's a big Flemington horse. I think he's possibly an Australian Guineas horse. I can't wait to get him to 2000 and 2400 (metres) but he is a colt so we'll try to maximise value on him.

''We'll bring him home, play around with him for a week or two and set him for the Australian Guineas. He's a really nice colt who can run in the Guineas second-up and then go to Sydney from there.''

Like Grunt, Addison has only been beaten once.

Ridden by Regan Bayliss for David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, Addison was still near last with 250 metres to run but came with a sustained finish to defeat Winkelmann (Rip Van Winkle) by a nose with So Splendid (Savabeel) a short-half-head back in thirds to give New Zealand- breds the trifecta.

Winning jockey Regan Bayliss said the increase in distance from 1300 metres when making her seasonal debut at Bendigo to 1600 metres made the difference.

"Her last 100 metres at Bendigo was the best part of her race," Bayliss said.

"I knew an extra 300 metres would suit her beautifully. It goes to show what scope she has winning second up at a trip that probably doesn't suit.

"There was good tempo throughout the race, I was following Darren Weir's horse and she gave us a beautiful track into the race. I wasn't sure I got there but she stuck her nose out at the right time."

Addison (pictured as a yearling ) advances her record to three wins from four starts with earnings of $77,600.

Purchased by Damon Gabbedy's Belmont Bloodstock on behalf of Peter Maher and partners, Addison comes from the first crop of Jimmy Choux.

A near three-quarter sister to 5-time Group 1 winning champion Thorn Park, Addison is the second foal of the winning Van Nistelrooy mare Ruqqaya.

A daughter of the NZ Broodmare Of The Year Sayyida (Zabeel), Ruqqaya has a 2yo colt by O'Reilly and a yearling filly by Savabeel. She was covered by Tavistock last year.
