Another Mare Flying the Flag for Time Thief

Mark Smith - Sunday December 17

The gallant mare In Her Time has been flying the flag for her now South African-based sire Time Thief but she is not alone as the Western Australian mare Volkoff is proving an able backup.

From the first crop of her sire, Volkoff earned her first stakes win when defeating Durendal in the Listed Miss Andretti Stakes at Ascot back in January.

The result was the same when that pair met in Saturday's Listed RS Crawford Stakes (1000m) at Ascot.

Trained by Gary Crispin and ridden by Jason Whiting, Volkoff started the even-money favourite in the four-horse field.

Volkoff had first run on Durendal (Medaglia d'Oro) who was caught up on the fence but could get no closer than a length on the line with Tenterden (Danehill Express) back in third.

"It worked out perfectly," Crispin told the West Australian.

"She's just a perfect mare. We've always had reasonably big expectations of her, but to win two Listed races is a big achievement for her and for me."

The 6yo mare has been a wonderful money-spinner for owner/breeder Paul Whyte.

With her second stakes success, Volkoff advances her record to 10 wins, 5 seconds and 1 from 29 starts with earnings of $431,475.

She is the sixth and penultimate foal of the Metal Storm mare Stormarama who was unraced after breaking her neck as a yearling.

Stormarama died in 2014. Her final foal is the 4yo Nicconi gelding Niccolodeon who won two in a row at Pinjarra and Ascot earlier this year and has not been seen out since.
