Stakes Double for the Boom Sire!

Tara Madgwick - Saturday December 16
Every stud that stands a young stallion wishes they could do what Spirit of Boom did at Doomben on Saturday in siring not one but two stakes-winners with Ef Troop taking the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes followed by Outback Barbie winning the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes.

Ef Troop as a yearlingThe Tony Gollan trained Ef Troop was a hot favourite to make it two wins in as many starts and got the job done with consummate ease.

He highballed in front and dashed away down the running to win the 1110 metre dash by more than five lengths running 1:03.69 seconds, a time considerably quicker than the fillies race won by his stablemate Outback Barbie.

Winning rider Matt McGillivray was in awe of Ef Troop after the flying Queenslander zoomed into Gold Coast 2YO Magic Millions favouritism with this scintillating display.

"It was amazing – he honestly only felt like he was going three-quarter pace today," McGillivray said.

"He has a high, long stride and just travelled so well."

A $70,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Eureka Stud draft for Gollan Racing/John Foote Bloodstock, Ef Troop will now go straight into the Magic Millions 2YO Classic next month.

"He has run quick overall time and he is a very smart horse," Gollan said. "You won't see him again until the big day now and we will head to the Millions a month between runs.

"This is definitely the fastest two-year-old I have ever had."

Ef Troop is the second winner from winning Exceed and Excel mare Limealicious, a half-sister to stakes-placed Sanosuke from a US Black Type family.

Eureka Stud will offer the full brother to Ef Troop as Lot 977 at the 2018 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Outback Barbie as a yearlingThe very next race saw Tony Gollan back in the winner's circle with Spirit of Boom filly Outback Barbie, who scored a debut neck victory in the Listed BRC Calaway Gal Stakes.

Winning a stakes race on debut is a fine achievement, but connections feel the filly has a way to go to catch up with her stablemate Ef Troop.

"If Ef Troop is the (Magic Millions) measuring stick, then Outback Barbie is a fair bit behind her," said winning rider Jim Byrne,

"But this filly doesn't really understand racing yet and she has a lot of upside."

Gollan was pleased with the debut win of Outback Barbie, although he admitted he was glad that two leading contenders were scratched from the race after drawing bad barriers.

"She is a really nice filly although I must admit when the acceptances came out I was very pleased to see Sunlight and Singular Sensation drawn the carpark, and those impressive fillies were left at home today," Gollan said.

"This filly Outback Barbie is going to be a hell of a lot better after Christmas.

"She won't need to be running again before the Magic Millions and she will find good improvement."

Outback Barbie was a $210,000 Magic Millions purchase for Alan & Jennifer Acton from the Eureka Stud draft and was the most expensive yearling from the first crop of Spirit of Boom.

She is the first foal of stakes-winning General Nediym mare Pure Purrfection, a half-sister to stakes-winner Global Warming.

Eureka Stud will offer the current yearling from Pure Purrfection, a filly by Pierro, at Magic Millions as Lot 203.

Ef Troop and Outback Barbie are the first and second stakes-winners for Eureka Stud's Spirit of Boom, a dual Group I winner by Sequalo, who won three races at two before training on to greater success as an older horse.
