Timely Stakes Win for Real Saga Mare

Mark Smith - Sunday December 10

The maiden stakes victory for the Real Saga mare Sylpheed in Saturday's Listed Just Now Quality at Doomben provided a timely update for a half-brother to be offered by Raheen Stud at the upcoming Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Raheen will consign a colt by Golden Archer out of Sylpheed's dam Domitilla in Book 2 of the sale on Sunday the 14th January.

Sylpheed's Japanese-based owner Tomohiro Sekiguchi requested Nozi Tomizawa be given the ride and he put in a polished performance to hug the rail and beat Denmagic (Denman) by one and a quarter lengths with Sheiswhatsheis (Bernardini) a neck further back.

Stakes-placed three times previously, the Toby Edmonds-trained mare advances her record to 3 wins, 3 seconds and 3 thirds from 15 starts with earnings of $215,900.

With Edmonds in New Zealand, his son Trent told AAP how the change of rider came about.

"Sylpheed is owned by Tommy Sekiguchi, who is based in Japan and has made his money through computers," Edmonds said.

"He has noticed on the internet Nozi riding winners around the place and sent us a Facebook message asking we book him. In fact, he was going to take the horse off us when we didn't book Nozi last start.

"She raced very well during the winter and was unlucky in a couple of races including the Queensland Guineas," Edmonds said.

"Her honesty has been rewarded today. It was good to get a win because we have had a bit of bad luck lately. Last time dad was away we won five races in a day at Caloundra and maybe he should stay away more."

Bred by Basil Nolen, Sylpheed was consigned by Raheen Stud to the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where she was knocked down to Sekiguchi for $36,000.

Sylpheed's dam Domitilla (Strategic) is a 3-time winning half-sister to Group II BRC Champagne Classic winner Free Wheeling (Ad Valorem) and the stakes-placed Easy Drama (Real Saga).

Besides her Golden Archer yearling colt, Domitilla has a foal by Zoustar that was born on September 18.

Sylpheed becomes the sixth stakes-winner for the Eureka Stud-based Real Saga who has five lots catalogued for the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
