Indian Pacific Goes Coast to Coast in Abell Stakes

Mark Smith - Friday March 1

Winless since capturing the Listed Summer Scorcher at Ascot three years ago, Indian Pacific jumped straight to the front and never looked back to land the Listed Entry Education Abell Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

Ridden by Jamie Mott and making his third start for Nick Ryan and carrying the colours of his former trainer Neville Parnham, the 7-year-old son Zoustar defeated the fast-finishing Plaing God mare Nunthorpe by a neck with the Maurice (JPN) entire Bank Maur a hard-charging third.

A $110,000 purchase for Parnhams Racing Stable from the Bowness Stud draft at the 2018 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Indian Pacific advances his record to eight wins, two seconds, and seven thirds with earnings of $761,960.

“The plan was to be forward and he flew the machines,” Mott said.

“I tried to get a few easy sectionals, and he had nothing of it. I let him run, and he was very tough.

“Nick has done a great job, and they were confident he was at his best.

“I’ve watched a few of his runs and knew he would be in for the fight.”

Neville Parnham said he sent Indian Pacific to Nick Ryan as there was not a lot for him in Perth.

A 3-time Listed winner and second to Zoutori in the 2021 Group 1 Newmarket Hcp, Indian Pacific is the best of seven winners from nine to race for the Listed VRC Talindert Stakes winner Rosarino, a daughter of the  Group III VATC Merson Cooper Stakes mare Rosa’s Joy (Rory’s Jester).

Rosarino is a half-sister to Group III QTC Dane Ripper Quality winner Rosa’s Spur, the dam of stakes-winner Members Joy, the dam of Pure Elation, the dm of dual Group II winner Pure Elation, the dam of stakes-winner Hip Hip Hurrah.

Rosarino died last June, and Patrick Payne purchased her final foal, a colt by D'Argento for $50,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
