Lloyd Looks to Galileo for Melbourne Cup 2018

Five sons of Galileo are likely to form part of six-time Melbourne Cup-winning owner Lloyd Williams' assault on the 2018 edition of Australia's great race.

GalileoWilliams claimed his latest Melbourne Cup triumph with Rekindling last month but alluded to a further five imports arriving in Melbourne around the time of his victory in partnership with young Irish trainer Joseph O'Brien.

Details of the latest batch of Macedon Lodge residents have become available via the Racing Australia website, which shows the recent arrivals are all four-year-olds to Australian time by the great Coolmore stallion.

All the horses, Exemplar, Douglas Macarthur, Orderofthegarter, Spanish Steps and Venice Beach were members of the Aidan O'Brien camp in Ireland before heading out Australia.

With 11 starts to his name, Douglas Macarthur is the most experienced of the quintet with his two wins including a success in the Group III Irish Derby Trial while the entire ran a half-length second to Rekindling in the Group III Ballysax Stakes (1m2f) in April.

Orderofthegarter defeated the subsequent Group II Zipping Classic winner TheTaj Mahalwhen he claimed the Group III Irish 2000 Guineas Trial (1m) at Leopardstown in April.

Orderofthegarter also finished ahead of The Taj Mahal when he ran second in the Group III Hampton Court Stakes (1m2f) at Ascot in June while Spanish Steps beat Melbourne Cup runner-upJohannes Vermeerto win the Group III Ballyroan Stakes (1m4f) in August.

Venice Beach has won two of his eight starts and been in the minor placings four times in a career that includes a third in the Group I Grand prix de Paris (2000m) at Saint-Cloud in July and a win in the Group III Chester Stakes (1m4 ½ f) in May.

Venice beach also finished second, beaten six lengths, to subsequent Champion Stakes winner Cracksman in the Group II Great Voltigeur Stakes (1m4f) at York on August 23.

Exemplar won a maiden at Galway in September last year and ran second in the Group III Enterprise Stakes (1m4f) at Leopardstown at his last run in September 2017.
