Sassy Lowers The Boom in Armansco Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday February 24

Six days after winning a Benchmark 64 for fillies and mares at Sale, the Spirit Of Boom filly Sassy Boom broke through at stakes level in the Group II Sportsbet Angus Armanasco Stakes at Caulfield.

A third win in the race for trainer Danny O’Brien, Sassy Boom was given a positive ride by Blake Shinn and was strong to the line in defeating the progressive So You Think filly So Glamorous by three-quarters of a length, with the Snitzel filly Serasana back in third.

A $155,000 Magic Millions purchase for her trainer from the Emirates Park draft, Sassy Boom advances her record to three wins and a second from eight starts with earnings of $269,450.

“She filled us with confidence last time that she’d won effortlessly,” O’Brien said.

“It was a barrier trial style of run. She’s a filly that we couldn’t get going in the Spring, so we only gave her the one run, but we’ve always had a good opinion of her.

“She had a very easy week, presented in great order again today, once again got a good map and a good ride, and it was a very painless watch.

“I think they’ll both (Sassy Boom) and Grinzinger Belle end up in the Kewney in two weeks. It’s the logical race for them both at Flemington.

“This filly’s also probably going to improve when she steps out to a mile; it’s a good problem to have. They’ve both won group races in the last seven days, a good result for her owners.”

“She’s an on-speed filly, and she’s very much a firm ground filly. She doesn’t appreciate anything other than a good three, good four.”

Sassy Boom is the second winner from as many to race for Harbour Fun, a half-sister by Harbour Watch (IRE) to stakes-winner Cat D’Antibes and Eye For Fun, the dam of Golden Slipper winner Mossfun, the granddam of Bodyguard.

Sassy Boom a $155,000 Magic Millions yearling

Harbour Fun has an unraced 2-year-old Pride of Dubai gelding named Simply Fun, an $80,000 Magic Millions purchase for  Kelly Schweida Racing from the Emirates Park draft.

After foaling a Bivouac filly last August, Harbour Fun was covered by Tassort.

Sassy Boom is the 26th stakes-winner for Eureka Stud’s Spirit Of Boom.
