Rising HK Star for Denman

Tara Madgwick - Monday December 4
Lonhro's Group I wining son Denman is one of the quiet achievers on the Darley NSW roster, but has a star on the rise in unbeaten Hong Kong trained three year-old Hot King Prawn, who scored his fourth successive win at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Hot King Prawn - HKJCTrained by John Size and ridden by Zac Purton, he cruised home to win the Class Three contest over 1000 metres by more than two lengths as favourite.

He clocked a brisk 56.03 seconds and carried 59kg, but his trainer John Size is in no hurry to step up the rising sprint star too quickly.

As a three-year-old, Hot King Prawn is eligible for the Griffin Trophy over 1400m on December 23, where he would be treated favourably at the weights against horses rated far below him, but Size is not convinced that race is the way to go.

"I think he'd probably win the Griffin Trophy, but I'm not going to go against my usual training patterns just to win one race," Size said.

"I'm a bit too conservative for that. There's no point extending him out in distance just because the race is there.

"He's facing Class 2 now, so I'd say the likelihood is I give him a break before I attack Class 2. I would like to give him a few months to develop a bit more. I'd say the only way he races again in the next couple of months is if I can find an easy Class 2, and as we just saw, there's not many of them."

Hot King Prawn was bred and sold by Torryburn StudHot King Prawn was a $90,000 Inglis Classic purchase for Aquanita Racing from the Torryburn Stud draft.

Bred and sold by Torryburn, Hot King Prawn is a half-brother to stakes-placed Siren's Fury being from Unbridled's Song (USA) mare De Chorus, a daughter of stakes-winner Val de Grace.

De Chorus has a yearling colt by Your Song and has foaled this spring producing a filly by The Factor (USA).

Denman has six entries for Inglis Classic next year, but just one for Magic Millions.
