Posthumous Honours for Former WA Star Old Money

Mark Smith - Sunday November 26

There was drama at the start of Saturday's Listed Magic Millions - Tattersall's Cup (2100m) when the favourite Royal Star was scratched at the barriers.

The Lindsay Smith trained Trap Of Fools was promoted to the $3.50 favourite with Douglas Whyte in the saddle and he didn't let supporters down.

Dictating terms in front, Whyte let the son of Poet's Voice drift out in the straight and was strong to the line in defeating Falcon Crest (Musket) by three-quarter of a length with Ihtsahymn (Ihtiram) half a length back in third.

It was the first stakes win for the 4yo gelding who has now won 6 of his past 7 starts, the last four in a row.

"He's a real determined horse I can tell you that," Whyte said

"He doesn't give himself a breather in the race, he manages to hold onto the bit and you think there is not going to be much left at the finish but he digs and fights.

"Good on Lindsay for preparing him so well."

Trap Of Fools becomes the first stakes winner for his dam Old Money who was one of the stars of racing in the west in 2000 with wins in the Group 1 WATC West. Australian Derby, Group II WATC C.B. Cox Stakes and Group III WATC West. Australian Oaks when carrying the colours of Bob and Sandra Peters.

The daughter of Old Spice was sold to American interests and she won an Allowance at Santa Anita and was third in the Grade II Buena Vista Stakes.

Retired to stud in America, Old Money had a troubled history and was repatriated in 2008.

She was no more productive back home, leaving four foals in nine years before her death in January 2016.

Trap Of Fools is her penultimate foal, with just a 2yo colt by Carlton House (GB) to follow.

Trap Of Fools is the 11th stakes winner for former Darley shuttler Poet's Voice (pictured) whose 3yo son Viridine was one of the finds of the spring, reeling off four consecutive wins in Sydney before an honest fifth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington.
