Where There is Smoke - Pierro

Tara Madgwick - Thursday November 16
This young sire has hit a real purple patch over the past few weeks and with four promising trial winners at Randwick on Thursday morning his winning run looks like extending through the summer.

Coolmore's Golden Slipper winner Pierro was the only active sire to produce three stakes-winners at Flemington in Cup Week in Pinot, Levendi and Kentucky Breeze.

While that trio are now enjoying a well-earned break it would appear Pierro has more promising three year-olds in the pipeline.

Pierata as a yearlingAt the Randwick trials on Thursday morning, four of them hit the line first with the Greg Hickman trained colt Pierata the most impressive.

A Randwick winner at two and Group II placed during the Brisbane Winter Carnival, Pierata has had a good spell since finishing a luckless seventh in the Group I BRC JJ Atkins Stakes.

He zoomed away from his rivals in the 730 metre trial to win by more than five lengths with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle. It was a dominant display that will see him well fancied when he returns to race day competition.

As a $160,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Kitchwin Hills draft for his trainer, Pierata will be eligible for the rich $2million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, a race that is surely somewhere on the radar for this talented colt.

Other notable three year-old winners for Pierro were Fresh Start (Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott), Aeecee Tong De (Gai and Adrian) and Patrina (Peter and Paul Snowden).
