Big Day for Savabeel - Savapinski Claims Matriarch Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday November 11
Not long after the Savabeel colt Embellish claimed the NZ 2000 Guineas at Riccarton, Savabeel earned further honours when his daughter Savapinski kept the ball rolling for the training partnership of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott by making every post a winner in Saturday's 7News Matriarch Stakes (2000m).

With Brenton Avdulla sporting the Dynamic Syndications silks, Savapinski defeated Payroll (Not A Single Doubt) by two and three-quarter lengths with Token Of Love (Al Maher) a length back in third. (photo Grant Courtney)

A last start second in the Tesio Stakes at Moonee Valley, the lightly raced Savapinski advances her record to 4 wins and 1 second from 7 starts with earnings of $267,880.

"I won on this horse at Hawkesbury one day and I said she won't be at her peak until she reaches 2000 metres," Avdulla said.

"They obviously had her set for grand final day."

The leading trainer at the Flemington carnival, Gai Waterhouse said she had this race on the agenda for some time.

"She's a mare on the rise and I've targeted this race for a while. I thought she would be very hard to beat. I knew that if Brenton used her speed she would be very hard to run down," Waterhouse said.

"She just skipped away like a little bunny rabbit.

"We'll come back and may be win this race again next year."

A $70,000 purchase by Dynamic Syndications/Gai Waterhouse Racing from the Waikato Stud draft at the 2015 NZB Select Yearling sale, Savapinski is the second foal of the unraced Pins mare Swarovski a half-sister to Listed winner Glitzy (O'Reilly).

Savapinski becomes the 69th stakes-winner for Savabeel while Embellish credited the Waikato stallion with his 14th Group 1 winner.
