Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Thursday December 14

There have been some handy winners of the Listed Channel 7 Gold Edition Plate (1200m) in its thirteen-year history, including Sizzling, Winning Rupert, Whypeeo, Zoustyle, Alligator Blood and Isotope.

The Rich Enuff filly Abounding has yet to break through at the stakes level but lines up in Saturday's edition at Eagle Farm with a favourites chance.

In four starts at black type, the Robert Heathcote-trained filly has finished second in the Group III Ken Russell Memorial Classic, second in the Listed Mode Stakes, second in the Listed Bill Carter Stakes, and third in the Listed Oxlade Stakes.

Abounding has paid her dues and, with $275,000 in the bank from nine starts, has been a terrific money spinner for connections.

The 3-year-old chestnut filly was a $75,000 buy for First Light Racing/Robert Heathcote Racing from the Telemon Thoroughbreds draft from Book 2 of the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Abounding is the best of four winners from five to race for the 4-time winning Casino Prince mare Transonic, which carried the Patinack colours to a third in the Group II VRC Wakeful Stakes and third in the Listed Ethereal Stakes.

Telemon has entered Transonic's Russian Camelot colt in the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and Inglis Classic.

With stallions such as Pakistan II, Sir Tristram, Sovereign Edition, and Star Way on the page, New Zealand bloodlines dominate the pedigree. However, this branch found unprecedented success in South Africa.

The first signs come with Transonic's dam Jet Past (SAF). The daughter of Jet Master was a 4-time winner and twice Group 1-placed. Her dam, Rather Rich (Star Way), is the daughter of the Group III-winning Sir Tristram mare Touch Of Silver, a half-sister to Petrava.

Abounding a $75,000 Magic Millions yearling

A daughter of Imposing, Petrava cemented her reputation as one of South Africa's greats.

Honoured as South Africa's Champion 3YO Filly of 1984, Petrava won ten races including four Group 1s. She left her mark as the dam of Champion 3YO Filly Hoeberg (NZ), whose wins included the Group 1 Cape Fillies Guineas and Group 1 Paddock Stakes, and the Group II winner Jallad, who became the champion sire in South Africa in 2001.

A daughter of Maroof, Hoeberg was a remarkable mare. After her heroics in South Africa, Hoeberg won the Chairman's Trophy in Singapore and finished third in the Group 1 Dubai Duty-Free at Nad Al Sheba.

In five starts for David Payne in Australia, Hoeberg finished second to Lonhro in the Group II Apollo Stakes and was third in the Listed Triscay Quality won by Oomph from Lady Cay.

There are few better-value stallions than Woodside Park Stud's Rich Enuff.

Abounding is not his only 3-year-old deserving a stakes victory. His son, Oscar's Fortune, was nosed out by the high-class Ripcord (Written By) in the Listed Placid Arc Stakes and most recently finished second to Overpass, a son of Rich Enuff's barn mate Vancouver, in the $1,500,000 Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot.
