Juvenile Trial Watch - Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday November 28

Two heats for juveniles at Randwick on Tuesday morning and we might have seen the winner of the 2024 Magic Millions 2YO Classic, which is not surprisingly trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

Quality Written By colt Straight Charge was a star at the official two year-old trials at the start of spring and backed it up with the closest of seconds to his stablemate Espionage when going down narrowly in the Group III ATC Breeders Plate back in September on debut.

He was having his first public outing since then and looked a class above, whistling across from an outside gate to lead and changing gear up the straight to win the 742 m scamper by three lengths in 43.09 with $1.3million Snitzel colt Trunk looking useful in his first trial for second.

Yulong race both colts who come from different sales, Straight Charge purchased from Magic Millions for $270,000 where he was the second highest priced yearling by Written By, while Trunk was a $1.3million Inglis Easter purchase and looks cheap now given Group I winning colts Ozzmosis and Griff are from his family.

The second heat for fillies was also won by the Waterhouse Bott stable with Street Boss (USA) filly Toque making it two wins from two trials when jumping fast to lead out wide covering ground all the way to win by three-quarters of a length over her stablemate Jupiter Hills, who is notable for being the most expensive yearling from the first crop of her sire Exceedance.  Interestingly, the second highest priced yearling for Exceedance is now a stakes-winner with Dublin Down winning the Group III VRC Maribyrnong Plate during the spring.

A $200,000 Magic Millions purchase from A List Stud for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Racing/Kestrel Thoroughbreds, Toque is the first foal of winning Exceed and Excel mare Gorgons, a daughter of stakes-winner Euryale, who traces back to a very good filly in Danglissa, who won the Group I ATC Flight stakes in 1999 for Gai Waterhouse. Street Boss has had good success with Exceed and excel mares and Toque may well add to that.

And if you listen to the trial, be aware that’s not the correct pronunciation as part-owner Frank Cook was quick to point out on Twitter!
