One To Watch - Seymour

Mark Smith - Friday November 17

De Bergerac has a bit to live up to, being a brother to Coolmore Stud Stakes runner-up C'Est Magique and a half to Blue Diamond Stakes winner Written By. Still, he is on his way after an impressive debut in the Mangalore Park Maiden Plate (1100m) at Seymour on Friday.

Ridden by Jordan Child for Grahame Begg, the 3-year-old son of Zoustar had few favours in the run. Forced to race three and four wide the trip from an outside barrier, De Bergerac put paid to the highly regarded Super One colt by a length under a kind ride. The US Navy Flag gelding Night People was two lengths back in third.

"He's a horse with a lot of ability and class. We drew wide but weren't panicked," Childs said.

"Sometimes, with a horse like him that you know has ability, you would rather be out of trouble and make your own luck.

"We were three wide with a bit of cover, and when I presented on the corner, he was never going to get beaten.

"He extended well to the line. He is a nice horse on the up and definitely has better races in store.

"He is still a bit babyish and cheeky, but with racing and time, that will grow out of him."

A homebred for Neville Begg, De Bergerac is the seventh winner for Tobougg (IRE) mare Yau Chin, a $3,000 Scone yearling, who won a maiden at Newcastle and placed a further six times in a ten-start career.

Yau Chin has a 2-year-old brother to Written By (Written Tycoon) in training with Grahame Begg and a yearling filly by Capitalist.

The 18yo mare missed last year.
