Roll On High Sets Sights on Thousand Guineas

Mark Smith - Tuesday November 7

The lightly raced 3-year-old Shamus Award filly Roll On High had been building to a peak performance and she chose the right stage in the Listed Howden Desirable Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.

Ridden by Billy Egan for Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, Roll On High came with a barnstorming finish from the rear of the field to defeat the Zoustar filly Joliestar by three-quarters of a length with the Brave Smash (JPN) filly Kimochi two lengths back in third.

Placed at her first two starts at Sandown and Bendigo, Roll On High impressed with a three and three-quarter lengths maiden win over 1400m at Pakenham on October 20.

The win was impressive enough for the stable to nominate the Group 1 Thousand Guineas as her next target.

“It was a beautiful ride. He rode a nice patient race on her, got cover. He waited and waited,” Coleman said.

“He was twitching to ask her to go and she was traveling so nicely underneath him but he just timed it to perfection and she’s been able to finish the race off so strongly.

“If she pulls up well then she’s probably earned her spot there (the Thousand Guineas).”

Carrying the colours of Slade Bloodstock, Roll On High is the first foal for the unraced High Chaparral (IRE) mare All Highs On Me, a three-quarter sister to the Group 1 Victoria Derby and Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes winner Monaco Consul.

Erinvale Thoroughbreds sold an Alabama Express filly out of All Highs On Me for $8,500 at the 2023 Inglis Great Southern Sale.

The High Chaparral mare foaled a Tagaloa filly on September.

Roll On High is the 24th stakes-winner for Rosemont Stud’s Shamus Award.
