Master Of The Seas Leads Home a 1-2 for Godolphin In Breeders' Cup Mile

Mark Smith - Sunday November 5

A third consecutive win in the Breeders' Cup Mile for Godolphin as Master Of The Seas (IRE) came from second last on the home turn to overpower fellow Godolphin runner Mawj (IRE).

Given plenty of time to find his feet by William Buik from an outside barrier, the Charlie Appleby-trained son of Dubawi launched down the centre of the track to nose out the 3-year-old Exceed And Excel filly Mawj, who Saeed bin Suroor trains.

The Jimmy Creed 7-year-old Casa Creed was a half-length back in third. The Japanese duo of Songline (JPN) and Carnelia (JPN) were disappointing.

Master Of The Seas has campaigned in North America since capturing the Group II Summer Mile at Ascot in July.

After winning the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile on September 16, the 5-year-old gelding was nosed out by Up To The Mark in the Grade 1 Coolmore Turf Mile at Keeneland on October 7.

The son of Dubawi advances his record to eight wins, three seconds and two thirds from 16 starts.

Appleby recorded his 10th Breeders' Cup victory from 20 starters. Buick won his eighth Breeders' Cup race.

Appleday said it was the plan to go back after drawing the outside gate.

"When we drew stall 14, I wouldn't say it was a dampener as much as it was more of a challenge for him," Appleby said.

William Buick thought he may have left a bit too much to do.

"I looked up halfway down the (backstretch), and I thought that's a lot of horses to pass," Buick said.

"On the home turn, I was a bit lucky because the horse in front of me didn't pull out, so I didn't turn in as wide as what I thought I would have to. So I managed to conserve a bit more ground than I expected.

"Once he went past the quarter-pole, he just took off."

A brother to the 2021 Woodbine Summer Stakes winner Albahr (GB), Master Of The Seas is the best of ten winners from twelve to race for the stakes-winning Danehill mare Firth Of Lorne, which was runner-up in the Longchamp Poule d'Essai des Pouliches.

Firth Of Lorne is also the dam of the Group III UAE Oaks winner Falls of Lora (Street Cry), the dam of the magnificent triple Group 1 winner Cascadian, who came back from an injury-enforced layoff to finish a 3-length seventh in Saturday’s Giga Kick stakes at Rosehill. It was his first start since finishing third to Giga Kick in the Group 1 All-Aged stakes at Randwick in April.

Another daughter of Firth Of Lorne is the 3-time winning Kingmambo mare Bint Almatar, the dam of Group 1 ATC Metropolitan Handicap winner Just Fine (Sea The Stars).

Firth of Lorne's final foal is the 3-year-old Dark Angel filly Sithchean, which made a winning career debut over a mile on the Chelmsford all-weather on March 2.

Master Of The Seas is a seventh Breeders' Cup winner for Dubawi, who commands a fee of £350,000 at Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud, Newmarket.
