Master Of The Seas Makes it a Family Stakes Double

Mark Smith - Sunday September 17

It's been a fantastic weekend for the Sheikh Mohammed-bred mare Firth Of Lorne (Danehill), whose son Master Of The Seas (IRE) was in a class of his own in the Group 1 Woodbine Mile and grandson Just Fine toting up in the Group III ATC Kingston Town Stakes at Randwick.

A 5-year-old gelded son of Dubawi, Master Of The Seas made the trip to Canada off the back of a 4-length romp in the Group II Summer Mile Stakes at Ascot on July 15.

The 64-day break did him no harm. With William Buick in the saddle for Charlie Appleby, Master Of The Seas thundered down the centre of the track to defeat Shirl's Speight (Speightstown) by three and three-quarter lengths with Lucky Score (Lookin' At Lucky) a neck back in third.

It was the seventh win in 14 starts for Master Of The Seas, who has placed a further four times, highlighted by a nose second to Poetic Flare in the 2021 English Two Thousand Guineas at Newmarket.

The Godolphin colour-bearer earned a "Win and You're In" spot in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita Park on November 4.

"He's pretty high maintenance, but the boys at home have done a great job, and I thought today he was much more the finished article," Buick told Blood-Horse.

"When he won at Ascot the last time, you sensed he was showing his best and back to his best form. He had some good 2-year-old form and I thought what he did there really showed how good he is."

A brother to the 2021 Woodbine Summer Stakes winner Albahr (GB), Master Of The Seas is the best of ten winners from twelve to race for the stakes-winning Danehill mare Firth Of Lorne, which was runner-up in the Longchamp Poule d'Essai des Pouliches.

Firth Of Lorne is also the dam of the Group III UAE Oaks winner Falls of Lora (Street Cry), the dam of the magnificent triple Group 1 winner Cascadian.

Another daughter of Firth Of Lorne is the 3-time winning Kingmambo mare Bint Almatar, the dam of Saturday's Group III ATC Kingston Town Stakes winner Just Fine (Sea The Stars), which has a Group 1 win of his own on the radar.
