Deep Impact's Muramasa Captures Coongy Cup

Shortly after Winx's Deep Impact (JPN) half-sister City Of Lights triumphed at Randwick, Deep Impact (JPN) made it a double when Muramasa became the 199th black-type winner for the Japanese legend when capturing Wednesday's Group III Neds Coongy Cup (2000m) at Caulfield.

Ridden by Daniel Moor for Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, Muramasa scythed between runners at the 200m to defeat Diamil (IRE) (Awtaad) by three-quarters of a length with Gregolimo (FR) (Galiway) a half-head back in third.

 Coming off a win in a 1630m benchmark 78 at Flemington on September 24, Muramasa advances his record to three wins and a second from nine starts with earnings of $264,115.

Earlier in the day, the Busuttin-Young team had to withdraw Uncle Bryn from the Caulfield Cup after discovering a small crack in his sesamoid.

Natalie Young said that Muramasa is improving as distances stretch out.  

I would like to see him in something like a Queen Elizabeth, 2600m at Flemington; he's won there before," Young told Racenet.

"He's bred to get out over further and further, and now we see he's breathing well and got that good turn of foot; we'll see where that takes him and where he ends up.

"He had a little tie-back procedure, and now he's two from two this time in. He's thriving..

"It's fantastic for (owner) Ozzie Kheir. To see him bounce back is great, as we always thought he was a nice horse."

A $500,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Arrowfield draft for Busuttin Racing, Muramasa is the first foal of High Chaparral's Group II ATC Silver Shadow Stakes winner Omei Sword.

Runner-up in the Group 1 ATC Golden Rose, Omei Sword was a $1,700,000 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale purchase for Dean Hawthorne Bstock (BAFNZ)/Freyer Bloodstock.

Out of Fastnet Rock's Group I MRC Thousand Guineas winner Irish Lights, Omei Sword has a 2yo I Am Invincible colt, which was a $260,000 purchase for Busuttin Racing from the Arrowfield Stud draft at the 2023 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Omei Sword has a yearling colt by Snitzel and was covered by him again last spring.
