Foxwedge Champion Second Season Sire

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday August 1
The foundation sire for Newgate Farm, Fastnet Rock's Group I winning son Foxwedge has enjoyed a fruitful past 12 months that has seen him soar past his rivals to finish as the Champion Second Season Sire for 2016/2017.

FoxwedgeFoxwedge made a modest, but encouraging start to his stud career siring six winners last season with metropolitan winner Foxplay his best performer and 12 months on she is now his first Group I winner.

Foxwedge has churned out 51 winners of $3.6 million with Foxplay one of his three Australian stakes-winners to go with star Kiwi Group II winner Volpe Veloce.

His burgeoning success will see Foxwedge cover a full book of mares this spring at Newgate Farm at a fee of $22,000.

Foxwedge was one of three second season stallions to top $3million in progeny earnings for the season with So You Think (Coolmore) and Smart Missile (Arrowfield) joining him in passing that milestone.

With a Group I winner in New Zealand to his credit in La Diosa to go with his Randwick Guineas hero Inference, So You Think was the most successful of the trio in terms of Group I winners, while Smart Missile led them all by winners with 66 on the board.

Dream Aplenty (USA)(Aquis Farm)  is also worthy of mention for his four Australian stakes-winners, which is one more than the above trio.
