Group Three Winner for Sebring

Tara Madgwick - Saturday October 21
Sebring six year-old Ulmann looks set for a good campaign after powering clear to win the Group III MRC Moonga Stakes at his second run back from a spell at Caulfield on Saturday.

A two time Listed winner previously, the Darren Weir trained gelding turned in a career best performance to win the 1400 metre feature by three-quarters of a length over his stable mate Burning Front.

"I told the owners I thought he needed another run to be honest," Weir said.

"I thought Burning Front was probably in a bit better shape than Ulmann was but the way the race was run suited for the horse that was just stalking those ones that were going a bit hard up front.

"Both horses ran great and I thought Burning Front was terrific in defeat but Ulmann - he's just a good horse."

"One of the main owners in him is from Perth so the preparation has been aimed around the Perth carnival," Weir said.

"He'll have another run here and then head across to Perth."

A $280,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Moody Racing from the Kia-Ora Stud draft, Ulmann has the overall record of seven wins and seven placings from 27 starts with prizemoney topping $540,000.

Bred by Kia Ora Stud, he is a three-quarter brother to Group III winner Mahisara and is one of six winners from good producer Darsini, a grand-daughter of Group I winner Midnight Fever.

He is also a three-quarter brother-in-blood to Sebring stakes-winner Candika, who is from a three-quarter sister to his dam Darsini, who has foaled this spring producing a colt by More Than Ready.

Ulmann is a new Group winner for Widden Stud's Sebring, who stands at a fee of $66,000.
