Second Stakes in a Fortnight for Snitzepeg

Mark Smith - Saturday October 21

A second stakes win in the space of two weeks for the Darren Weir-trained Snitzepeg who showed his win in the Listed Snitzepeg was no fluke with a dominant performance in Saturday's Listed MRC Gothic Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

One of the best to begin, Snitzepeg sat outside the leader Lord Sundowner and the two had the race to themselves over the final two furlongs with Snitzepeg edging clear under Craig Williams to win by half a length with Wassergeist the same distance back in third.  (photo Grant Courtney).

"He's a very tough horse," Weir said

"He's trained on very well from last start.

"It's hard to get horses in the order he was in today, he was super fit and had the race run to suit."

The Carbine Club Stakes and Sandown Guineas are now on the radar for the son of Snitzel.

"He's going to follow a similar path to (2015 Gothic winner) Mahuta and he looks to be on track so far.

"I don't think the mile will be a problem because he looked to be under a bit of pressure straightening but was holding them on the line.

A $260,000 purchase by John Foote Bloodstock from the Three Bridges Thoroughbreds draft at the 2016 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Snitzepeg advances his record to 3 wins and 2 seconds from 10 starts with earnings of $204,850.

A half-brother to Group III Ming Dynasty Stakes winner Metallic Crown (Northern Meteor), Snitzepeg (pictured as a yearling) is the fifth winner from six foals out of the winning Fuasichi Pegasus mare Pegasus Queen who hails from the family of outstanding New Zealander (Mr) McGinty a 6-time Group I winner on both sides of the Tasman.

Pegasus Queen has a 2yo Not A Single Doubt filly named Killer Queen and a yearling colt by Deep Field. She was covered by Pride Of Dubai last spring.
