The top bets from Ben Dorries for Caulfield Cup day

Ben Dorries - Thursday October 19

I haven't troubled the scorers too much lately with my bets, but I'm confident the number 15 will bring good things on Caulfield Cup day.

DANISH TWIST (Caulfield Race 6 No 11)

In the fair dinkum department, this NSW mare has been knocking on the door of a win for a while now but just hasn't had much luck. It was a hopeless case for her backers when she never got a clear run or any sort of look at them when resuming in a Group III over 1200m at Rosehill last month. Her closing splits that day were fabulous and then she ran well when not far behind the Ron Quinton pair of Daysee Doom and Dixie Blossoms. Staying at 1400m third-up looks ideal. Only issue is the barrier but will leave that to a bloke by the name of Joao Moreira to sort out.

HARLEM (Caulfield Race 8 No 15)

So much to like about this Lindsay Park European import in the Caulfield Cup. Drops 5kg and will hardly know himself with 51.5kg, draws a beautiful soft gate and the blinkers finally go on for the $3million Cup which should improve him a length or two. Smashed them in the Group III Naturalism then had a tough work-out in a brutally-run edition of The Bart Cummings, which will have topped him off for this. We are getting double-figure odds and I'm keen to inflate than even further with an odds boost and have a strong bet.

SOLD FOR SONG (Caulfield Race 9 No 15)

I reckon veteran Queensland trainer Kevin Kemp can conjure his biggest career win with this one-time cheapie mare in the Tristarc Stakes. She went fabulous when fresh in the Gilgai and now goes back to mares' grade. Importantly for her, she draws a good barrier. She doesn't have much speed but too often in the past she has drawn bad barriers and been forced to go way too far back which has given her little hope. Her regular partner James Orman should be able to position her handier than she has often been. Some small query on her ability to run a strong 1400m in this class but I'll back her in given the good draw. I simply have to have an each-way dabble at the price.
