Rebel Dane Filly Wins Northern Territory Derby

Tara Madgwick - Monday July 24

Rebel Dane might be best known for siring Golden Slipper winning filly Fireburn, but he has another filly making a name for herself and that’s Anphina, who scored a determined win in the $135,000 Northern Territory Derby at Fannie Bay last Saturday.

Fourth in the Group III SAJC Auraria Stakes and the Listed SAJC Clare Lindop Stakes back in April, Anphina has always shown staying potential and was primed for the Derby by her trainer Kerry Petrick.

She was strong to the line, holding off the challenge of Almanzor (Fr) gelding Grinzinger Bishop to win by a head taking her overall record to two wins and three placings from 16 starts with prizemoney just shy of $180,000.

Anphina was bred at Silverdale Farm and is a full sister to another Rebel Dane winner in Princess Pancakes being the second winner from Whytwokay, a Domesday grand-daughter pf Group III winner Chez Paree.

From very small numbers, Rebel Dane has sired 18 winners from 35 starters in his first two crops and is yet to have a two year-old runner this season from his third crop which features just four named foals.

His next crop of eight rising two year-olds includes his most expensive yearling to date, a colt from Mahogany Room that made $140,000 at Inglis Easter for Widden Stud when bought by Guy Mulcaster/ Chris Waller Racing. Named Mahogwise Honour, he’s currently in work so will have every opportunity to make his mark at two.

The stocks of Rebel Dane soared with the emergence of $4.2million earning dual Group I winner Fireburn and he covered 111 mares last spring at Widden Stud at a fee of $27,500 following on from 50 the year before in his final year in Victoria.

Rebel Dane drops to $22,000 this spring and will be a great punt for breeders looking to  ride his second wave of success.
