Kuroshio Filly Kairyu Dominant in Anglesey Stakes

Mark Smith - Sunday July 23

Former Darley stallion Kuroshio has an emerging star in Kairyu, who kept her record at a perfect two-for-two with a dominant performance in Saturday's Group III Anglesey Stakes at the Curragh.

A facile winner of a 5f maiden on debut at Naas on June 28, the Michael O'Callaghan-owned and trained filly came from midfield under champion jockey Colin Keane to defeat the favourite Pearls And Rubies (No Nay Never) by one and a quarter lengths with Do It With Style (Ten Sovereigns) three-quarters of a length back in third.

The 2yo Pat Turley-bred filly was a recent €80,000 purchase for O'Callaghan at the Goresbridge Breeze-Up Sale.

"She looks very smart. Colin said she doesn't want that ground, it was plenty soft - she was just good and tough," O'Callaghan told Irish Racing.com.

"He said she has a savage turn of foot where she can go and put a race to bed. The gaps appeared a little bit before he wanted them. He feels she relaxes so well that she'll probably get seven furlongs in time.

"I was thinking about going to the Duchess Of Cambridge at Newmarket last week, but I wasn't 100% happy with her work, so we just waited another week.

"Colin thinks she'll be better on better ground, and she'll probably go for something like the Lowther now.

"Patrick Turley sold her, his father is here, and she's the first foal out of a Lope De Vega mare that they have. They are better known in the jumping ranks, but they are very good at what they do and know the time of day. Paddy highly recommended the filly and I really liked her.

"She's still a little bit high behind, and she's going to grow plenty, so she could potentially be a very nice filly.

"My wife Siobhan named her, it's Japanese after the stallion."

Kairyu is out of the Lope De Vega mare Vegatina, which hails from the family of Group 1 Prix Morny Stakes and Group 1 Middle Park Stakes winner Blackbeard.

A Group II winning son of Exceed And Excel, Kuroshio is the sire of five stakes winners, headed by the Group 1 SAJC Goodwood Hcp winner Savatoxl.

Kuroshio found a new home in Ireland at Compas Stallions/Starfield Stud, where he stands for €5,000.
