Qewy runs in Tuesday's Goodwood Cup

Darryl Sherer - Tuesday August 1

The Charlie Appleby-trained Qewy has conditions in his favour to upset Big Orange in his bid for a third successive Goodwood Cup (2m) on Tuesday.

Recent rain has the going at Goodwood listed as good to soft and while it would not be a bother to Qewy it is not ideal for Big Orange who loves fast ground.

Qewy won last year's Group III Geelong Cup before finishing fourth in the Melbourne Cup where Big Orange finished tenth, then leading most of the way under Kerrin McEvoy to win the Listed Sandown Cup over 3200m.

At his first start since the Sandown Cup, Qewy finished fourth in the Queen Alexandra Stakes over two miles and five furlongs at Royal Ascot on June 24.

Appleby told Racing UK he is intending to travel to Australia again later this year with Qewy, who will wear cheek pieces at Goodwood.

"I was pleased with his run at Ascot and he's come out of it well," Appleby said. "He probably found two miles and five (furlongs) a bit too far at Royal Ascot and dropping back in trip will suit.

"Big Orange is exceptionally good on quicker surfaces and is even money. You can throw a blanket over the rest of us, so we will give it a go.

"The plan is to go back to Australia with Qewy, so I've got to map his races timing wise to get down there fit and well."

Big Orange has won the last two runnings of the Goodwood Cup which will be run at Group I level for the first time on Tuesday.

The six-year-old made most of the running last time out to defeat Order Of St George narrowly in The Gold Cup at Royal Ascot over two and a half miles.

Wicklow Brave was unplaced in last year's Melbourne Cup and is one of 14 declared runners for Tuesday's race.

Sportsbet has Big Orange its $1.83 favourite for the Goodwood Cup. Wicklow Brave is available at $17 with Qewy a $26 chance.
