Marine One to stand at Mogumber Park

Breednet - Friday May 12

Mogumber Park has tapped into the precocious Capitalist sireline with news his Group 2 winning sprinter Marine One will stand alongside Champion WA 2yo sire Safeguard at Bullsbrook.

Marine One let down with a big finish for a career-high victory in last year’s G2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield and he’s the latest first-crop son of Capitalist retiring to stud following Captivant (G1 Champagne Stakes) and Profiteer (RL Inglis 2YO Millennium).

Marine One

“He relaxed early and was strong late,” co-trainer David Eustace said after the Rubiton Stakes.  “He’s a son of Capitalist, who is doing a great job at stud, and that Group 2 shows he’s got a bright future when he goes to stud.”

Mogumber Park owners Colin Brown and Fiona Lacey moved quickly to sign Marine One.  An added advantage is the continuing support of his part-owners including Matthew Sandblom (Kingstar Farm) and the China Horse Club.  “We are very excited to enter into this partnership with Kingstar Farm and the China Horse Club,” Brown said.  “Marine One certainly fits the profile for a successful stallion in WA and to have their support is an enormous endorsement for not only our farm, but the WA breeding industry as a whole.”

Those comments were reiterated by Kingstar Farm’s Matthew Sandblom and China Horse Club Chairman Teo Ah Khing.

“We have had some success selling yearlings at the Perth Magic Millions sale but we realised that what people really want is Westspeed qualified horses so standing Marine One in Perth will achieve that.” Sandblom said.

“Westspeed is the most generous breeding scheme in the country and it was a key reason why the Perth yearling sale was so strong this year.  We will also be bringing across mares in foal to Newgate and Kingstar stallions and their progeny will become Westspeed eligible with the breed-back option.  This will give Perth buyers even more choice in Westspeed eligible yearlings.”

Teo Ah Khing said China Horse Club is excited to enter the West Australian market with Marine One in partnership with Kingstar Farm and Mogumber Park.

“Marine One offers Western Australian breeders an outcross sireline and the key ingredients of a successful stallion – a great physical, precocity, and speed.  The DNA of China Horse Club is one that has global outlook but is built on local partnerships and this venture is another extension of that.

“As such we not only look forward to supporting Marine One but to working with and getting to know West Australian breeders and participating in the broader market.”

Meanwhile, Fiona Lacey inspected Marine One in Victoria and was suitably impressed.  “He’s drop-dead gorgeous – an absolute stunner,” Lacey said this week.  “He has so much presence and we’re over the moon to secure him for Western Australia.

“Capitalist is a son of Written Tycoon and that sireline brings new blood to WA.  And that precocity will be a perfect fit for Westspeed Platinum.”

Marine One was a $500,000 buy for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace at the 2020 Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast and he jumped the blocks with a Group 3 placing to Finance Tycoon (Written Tycoon) in the VRC Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) at Flemington.

Capitalist was the undisputed Champion Australian 2yo Colt of 2015-16 after winning the G1 Golden Slipper Stakes and RL Magic Millions 2yo Classic.  He’s been an instant success at stud as Champion Australian first and second-season sire for winners and he’s home-and-hosed for a third-season title in that category.

There have been 169 individual winners in his first three crops to date and an amazing 18% of them have earned black-type.

Marine One also has early-season 2yo form through his dam Golconda (Snitzel) who won the LR Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield in 2013.  Second-dam Eureka Jewel (Semipalatinsk) claimed four black-type events to Group 2 level in the VRC Kewney Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.

Golconda is also the dam of Marine One’s younger full-brother Cannonball who won the G3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill during the Sydney Autumn Carnival.  Trainer Peter Snowden subsequently announced the Capitalist 3yo will be set for the G1 King’s Stand Stakes (1000m) at Royal Ascot on June 13.

Marine One’s pedigree won’t stand still and his introductory service fee won’t remain at $8,800 (inc GST) in the seasons to come.  A limited number of shares are available for purchase.
