Greg Polson previews Wagga Tuesday August 1

Greg Polson - Tuesday August 1

Punters will need to tread wary on the heavy (10) surface at Wagga on Tuesday but if we are prepared to show some patience there is a standout bet in the last.

The Chris Heywood-trained Lighthouse will be chasing back to back wins on heavy ground when he lines up in the XXXX Gold Benchmark 60 Handicap (1000m).

Lighthouse relished the heavy conditions hitting the line strongly to win a benchmark 55 at Wagga resuming on July 9 shouldering 61.5kg and doesn't look badly treated with 61kg going to the benchmark 60 on Tuesday.

Lighthouse's only other run on heavy ground resulted in a photo-finish second over the Wagga 1000m so the now eight-year-old clearly handles wet ground.

Lighthouse has won five races in his 19-start career and it is worth noting the statistics read substantially better with the five victories coming from 12 starts at 1050m or shorter.

Brad Clark was the winning jockey on Lighthouse last start and retains the ride on Tuesday.

Proven in the conditions, racing at his preferred distance and at $4.40 in early betting, Lighthouse represents genuine value for punters.
